Does my product need to be registered in the Product Intelligence Platform?

What Types of Products Need to be Registered?

Here at Smarter Sorting, we provide product insights and accurate waste and transportation classifications across over 7000 federal and state regulations to some of the largest retailers in the US. We believe that every product that may have an impact on human or environmental health and safety should be assessed, including those with chemical formulations or components, electronics and powered devices, batteries, bulbs, formulated articles, and kits that contain such items.

For the purposes of your licensing agreement, we share insights and classifications based on your verified data for any products that have regulatory concern for any of our retailers. Having accurate data on these products means every product is shipped, handled, stored, and disposed of safely and compliantly every time.

It’s important to note that your retailers set the specific requirements for registration with Smarter Sorting. Depending on the retailer, you may have received information about Smarter Sorting and what products qualify for the program when you began the onboarding process.

Here are the broad categories that we assess:

Formulated Products

This category includes chemical products that aren’t for human consumption like cleaning products, personal care products, health and beauty products, arts and craft supplies and more. Nutritional supplements, OTC products and other consumables are also part of this group. To review the specific details and documentation you’ll need to register a formulated product, take a look at this article.

Powered Devices

This category includes anything that runs on electrical power like A/C-Powered household appliances and home accessories, TVs and audio equipment, anything powered by a battery, toys and games with electrical components, anything with lights or a circuit board and more. Products powered by solar energy or fuels of any type are also included. To review the specific details and documentation you’ll need to register a powered product, take a look at this article.

Batteries

This category includes all types of batteries for all uses. Whether packaged and sold individually, as a battery bank, or inside of or included with any device, batteries should always be declared and assessed.
