How do I register a powered product?
How Do I Register a Powered Product
Overview
As our retailer partners strive to stay ahead of evolving regulations in the powered devices and electronics market, we recognize the importance of gathering accurate information on these products. Whether a device runs on A/C power or requires batteries, proper configuration and detailed information is crucial for safe and compliant transportation, handling, storage, and disposal.
To ensure seamless registration and classification of your powered device, we've outlined the necessary requirements and steps to input the required details. Our team is committed to providing you with the support and guidance you need throughout the onboarding process.
Basic requirements
- Basic product information: You’ll need the Consumer Facing UPC and Product Name. You’ll also need the Brand Name and a Quantity for products that contain more than one unit. Please name each component something unique, this ensures your retailer properly disposes of each component within the UPC.
- Product type: For powered products or components, you’ll select “Electronic.” You’ll have the opportunity to select how the device is powered. Depending on your answer, the system will automatically create the corresponding battery component card if needed. You will also be asked if the powered product has a display screen. If it does, you will be asked about screen size and screen type.
- Other product details: You’ll need the Weight or Volume of the product and the Unit of Measurement for electrically powered products/components..
Documentation for powered products/components
For electrically-powered products that DO NOT have a battery component, you’ll only need to upload a PDF version of the user manual or spec sheet. This may be an insert included with the product that describes the basic operation and safety information or even a PDF version of the packaging layout if that is all that is available.
Smarter Sorting and the retailer use this documentation to ensure that all qualifying components of the product are represented and entered correctly. You’ll need to upload a PDF for each electrically-powered component of your product. It may be the same document if different documentation is not available.
My product DOES have a battery component. What should I do?
If a powered product runs on batteries and the batteries are included, you’ll need to declare them as a component of the overall product. For battery components you’ll be prompted for the specific documentation and details needed, depending on the type.
For all batteries you’ll need the following:
- Battery SDS or Article Information Sheet (AIS)
- Battery Weight and Unit of Measure
- Number of Cells
- Battery Configuration (This refers to how the battery is packed within the product)
For Lithium-Base Batteries, there are additional details:
- UN 38.3 Test Report (all types)
- Lithium Content in Grams (Lithium Metal)
- Watt Hour Rating (Lithium Ion)
If it is an LED light bulb, please use item type 'electronic' when registering the bulb. If it is a non-LED, please use item type 'other'.
How do I input the information into the platform?
The process of manually inputting information into our Product Intelligence Platform is quick and intuitive. Start with any electrically-powered components. Upon declaring how they are powered, the system will add the shell of the appropriate battery components for you automatically. For each component, you’ll be prompted for the specific information and documentation needed to get through the process.
