How do I register a battery?

Overview

If your product is a battery or battery bank, with no other components, you’ll only need to provide the documentation and details of the battery. All types of batteries must be registered. This includes standard, alkaline batteries, dry cell batteries, lithium-based batteries, lead-acid batteries, and Nickel metal hydride batteries. Below you’ll find the details of the various requirements for different types of batteries. 
 

Basic requirements

1. Basic product information: You’ll need the Consumer Facing UPC and Product Name. You’ll also need the Brand Name and a Quantity for products that contain more than one unit. Please name each component something unique, this ensures your retailer properly disposes of each component within the UPC. 

1. Product type: For any type of battery, you’ll select  “Battery” from the dropdown.  You’ll then have the opportunity to declare whether the battery powers something or is just a battery.  If your product is made up of only batteries, you should select “This product is a battery.”

 

Documentation and additional details for batteries

For all batteries, you’ll be prompted for the specific documentation and details needed, depending on the type. For all types batteries you’ll need the following:

1. Battery SDS or Article Information Sheet (AIS)
2. Individual battery weight and unit of measure

 

For Lithium-base batteries, you’ll need a few more things:

• UN 38.3 Test Report (all types)
• Number of cells per battery (all types).
  • If your battery has over 20 watt hours, it is more than likely more than 1 cell. Please ensure you depict the correct cell count when asked in the Product Intelligence Platform. You can find this information on your battery documents, however, the number of cells tested on the UN 38.3 is often confused with cells in the battery. If you have questions about your battery, please reach out to Support and provide the SDS and UN 38.3 or ask your battery manufacturer.
• Lithium content in grams (lithium metal)
• Watt hour rating (lithium ion)
• For lithium metal and ion, you will be asked if the battery is a button cell battery, which is a small, single-cell, flat and round battery.

 

How do I input the information into the platform?

The process of manually inputting information into our Product Intelligence Platform is quick and intuitive. Once you declare that your product is just a battery, containing no other components, the system will guide you through the process with dynamic fields based on battery type. You won’t be able to submit a product for classification without providing all the information needed, so you don’t need to worry about forgetting anything.
