How do I register a formulated product?

 

Overview 

If a product has a chemical formulation, and isn’t intended for human consumption, we evaluate it for potential regulatory burden. This includes things like cleaning products, health and beauty products, garden chemicals, and aerosol products of all types.

 

We also evaluate products that are intended for human consumption but are not considered standard food. These often include supplements, vitamins, and foods containing alcohol or dispensed by aerosol.

 

Evaluating these products for potential regulations ensures that everyone has the information needed to transport, handle, store, and dispose of them safely and compliantly

 

Basic requirements

1. Basic Product Information – You’ll need the Consumer Facing UPC and Product Name. You’ll also need the Brand Name and a Quantity for products that contain more than one unit. Please name each component something unique, this ensures your retailer properly disposes of each component within the UPC.

2. Other Product Details – You’ll need the Weight or Volume of the product and the Unit of Measurement.

 

Documentation 

1. If a product requires a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), you’ll need a PDF version to upload.

2. If your product requires an EPA Permit, you’ll need the registration ID and a PDF version of the permit to upload.

 

Ingredients and formulation details 

• You need the publicly available ingredients, as required.
• You will be asked for packaging material information for formulated components
• The ingredients should be input in descending order of concentration, as mandated by product type.
• Additionally, you should be prepared to report CAS numbers for each ingredient (as applicable) and a concentration range for selected ingredients.
• Depending on your product, you may be asked for additional details such as a form/phase, flashpoint, or PH.
• Please ensure that the percentage of your ingredients in the product does not equal above 100%.
• We also need ingredients listed other than '100% proprietary'. Items with only this as an ingredient cannot be properly classified.

We understand that your product formulation and proprietary information are important to your business. However, providing transparent information regarding the concentration ranges of your product's ingredients will help us provide you with the most accurate classifications in a timely manner. We do not require your exact formulation or proprietary details. Therefore, please provide concentration ranges as small as possible to ensure a faster and more accurate classification of your product.

How can I mark ingredients as proprietary?

All of your concentration ranges are already kept secret from your retailer, but if you would like to hide the ingredient name and CAS number as well then you can select 'proprietary' on your ingredient. You cannot hide ingredients that are listed on your SDS. To do so, enter your ingredients in the comma separated box, then move to the next page. Here you can see the 'proprietary' checkbox as an option under all ingredients that were not parsed off an SDS.

Once done marking the ingredients, you can toggle your view to see what your retailer would be shown.

In the supplier view you can see 'water' and 'sulfuric acid' are marked proprietary.

Now, click the 'preview retailer view' button on the top right of the composition information. This is what your retailer would see, which hides those proprietary ingredients.

 

How do I input the information into the platform?

 

The process of manually inputting information into our Product Intelligence Platform is quick and intuitive. The system prompts you for what it needs at every step along the way. In general, you’ll start with the basic product information like UPC, Product Name and Brand Name. You will then be asked about intended use and packaging material. If your product has a Safety Data Sheet, you should upload it. You’ll always need ingredient names, CAS numbers and ranges of concentration. If other details are needed, based on your inputs, the system will let you know.
