Product Intelligence Platform - Examples of the information needed to classify products
What information do I need to register my products?
For all products:
When registering your products with Smarter Sorting, 'component' means all potentially-regulated items that are included in the box. Please include all components. Using a TV as an example, the components would be as follows:
1. TV (powered by AC)
2. Remote control
3. Batteries for remote
Component does not mean the individual ingredients that make up your formulated product, you will be able to enter that information later.
Also, please ensure each component has a unique product name. This ensures your retailer knows what the item is and how to dispose of it.
UPCs should be 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits in length (including leading zeros) and contain only numbers. The UPC provided must be an accurate, registered UPC from a recognized authority, such as GS1, and include a valid check digit. Additionally, the UPC should correspond to the individual, point-of-sale item, not the packaging UPC.
Product types:
Smarter Sorting requires different information for each product to be properly classified. Below are the details of what is needed for each of the 3 broad categories that Smarter Sorting evaluates:
- Formulated Products: To register a formulated product, you will need to provide information related to the formulation, such as the list of ingredients used, their percentages and your SDS. For more details, check out how to register a formulated product.
- Powered Devices: For powered devices, the necessary information includes technical specifications such as voltage, wattage, and amperage. For more details, check out how to register a powered product.
- Batteries: To register a battery, you will need to provide documentation such as an SDS or AIS, and a UN 38.3 Test Report for lithium types. For more details, check out how to register a battery.
We will only ever ask for information that is directly related to the regulatory burden of your product type.
Smarter Sorting's system is also dynamic and will prompt you for any additional information we need before you send the product off for classification.
